Thesis Title: Cornish Mining Landscapes: Perceptions and Experiences of Industrial Archaeology within a Post-Industrial Society
About
Hilary completed her PhD at the Institute of Archaeology in 2012. Her research interests encompass the fields of industrial archaeology, archaeology education, public archaeology, cultural heritage and contemporary/historical archaeology. Hilary's current research focuses onĀ deindustrialisation and the post-industrial phases of sites. She is particularly interested in the period between industrial drawdown/closure and the emergence of heritage status. Within this she is interested in developing methods of recording memories of industrial sites in the recent past.
Her PhD research examined changing values towards metalifferous mining sites in Cornwall (southwest Britain) through the post war period. This included the different social, political and economic values that mine sites embody as well as contestation of their boundaries, management and usage.
Hilary is also co-running (with Joe Flatman, UCL Institute of Archaeology) a project examining Humour in Archaeology. She also has a professional background in archaeology and education, having taught within further/adult education and having worked in community archaeology/art.
