About
I am researching the global trade in recycled textiles, and have a special interest in recycling technologies in India. I am now working on a major ESRC funded project 'The Waste of the World', and have just completed a year's fieldwork in north Kerala, studying a handloom industry declining in the face of global competition.
I have been researching both the recycling of Indian clothing and saris into Western fashion, and the reuse of Western cast-offs as shoddy fibre to be remade into Indian blankets and textiles. I have recently worked with a photographer, Tim Mitchell, to bring images of the people and technolgies involved to a wider public.
