About

I study ancient technology, particularly extractive and production technologies, with a view to reconstructing physio-chemical and socio-economic contexts.
Utilising analytical techniques including SEM and XRF I am interested in characterising and reconstructing the processes and chemistry of ancient technologies, as well as tackling more traditional archaeological questions of who, what and why. I am involved in collaborative work in Austria on iron smelting debris, as well as the focus of my dissertation on material from Exeter University, and I have undertaken a number of collaborations with the Portable Antiquity Scheme to study jewellery and dress adornments. I usually focus on the Roman period, but have a further interest in theoretical, digital, computing and statistical archaeologies.
