Faculty Member, School of Slavonic and East European Studies
Senior Lecturer in East European Politics
About
I studied Russian and French at the University of Leeds and later completed a Masters in Russian and East European Studies and a PhD at the University of Birmingham. My PhD thesis dealt with the role played by political norms in the emergence and consolidation of political parties in the Czech Republic. I joined University College London in 2003 as Lecturer in East European Politics, having previously worked as Lecturer in Politics in at Brunel University, West London.
My principal research interests are the politics of the Czech Republic, the formation and organization of political parties (and alternatives to parties); institutional theory; anti-etablishment parties in Central and Eastern Europe; the politics of the centre-right in Central and Eastern Europe; comparative democratization; and the political representation of older people in Central and Eastern Europe.
I am currently working on research on pensioners' parties and interest organizations in Central and Eastern Europe; the development of new anti-establishment parties in Central and Eastern Europe; the relationship of the CEE centre-right to the British Conservatives; and the place of CEE in European comparative politics.
I also write an occasional blog on politics, Central and Eastern Europe, and suburban life at http://drseansdiary.wordpress.com
